Communication Skills Workshop
The flagship Communication Skills Workshop, now in its 36th year, provides 16 sign language skill improvement sessions in an immersive and interactive environment during its 4-day workshop. Participants have an opportunity to take a self-assessment tool that helps them choose sessions suited to their language development goals. Optional evening activities on special topics are offered.
Session A – ASL teachers, Deaf Ed teachers and parents of deaf/hard of hearing children will learn and practice expressive/receptive sign language skills in an interactive setting. Topics include Deaf Culture and Deaf Community, as well as the difference between ASL as a distinct language and English-based sign communication systems.
Sessions B & C – Educational interpreters will refine their expressive/receptive transliterating and sight translation skills. Topics include team interpreting, Code of Professional Conduct, and preparation for the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Written Test of English Proficiency (TEP), the Basic, or Advanced performance test (with the option to take the performance test during the workshop). BEI Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available. Learn more about BEI.
